Backyard Block Party - Reaching the Community in Your Own Backyard
/On August 27th, Poplar Bluff First Church of God hosted it's very first Backyard Block Party. What exactly is a "backyard block party?," you ask. It's awesome, is what it is. PB First feels that it's important to connect to the people around them, so they decided where better to start than at South Pointe Apartments in their own backyard.
Their first attempt on Aug 20th got rained out, but that didn't stop them. They immediately rescheduled, and nearly fifty church members came out this past beautiful (aka HOT) Sunday afternoon to set up tables and chairs, grill hot dogs with the works, and serve up every flavor chip you could ask for (except maybe those weird biscuits and gravy ones.)
What better way to start a relationship, than over food. PB First knows that the best way to open the door of communication and connection is through a simple act of kindness.
The PB First Children's Ministry Team took it a step further and collected school supplies for months in order to pass out pre-loaded backpacks to the school aged children who attended. No kid should have to go to school without the necessities, (and that school supply list seems to keep getting longer and longer, am I right?) #dontforgetthegluesticks
South Pointe Apartments was thrilled at the outpouring of love, while PB First was simply honored to help. Some sat and got to know each other, others played ball in the court yard. And a few even had a grand ol' time in the bounce house (mainly children.) Fun and fellowship was had by all and it was truly a beautiful time together.
To participate in experiences like this, consider becoming a part of the ever growing Poplar Bluff community. Your personality, gifts, and quirks are what makes the community stronger!
"A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."
Ecclesiastes 4:12
This means, when people bring together their different strengths and weakness, they are so much stronger than one individual alone. When we grow committed to each other and stand together in unity, there is nothing we can't accomplish. Community begins when we step out of our comfort zones and share our love and talents with the world! All it takes to start, is a one simple step into your own back yard.
If you we're unable to attend, we certainly missed you. But guess what? There are many more Free opportunities to hang out with your community coming up SOON!
PB First is planning: Movie on the Lawn Sep 24th; Tailgate Cook-off Oct 15th; and their annual Fall Festival Oct 29th, just to name a few! Check out the Artist By Heart Calendar for even More!
